To mark its arrival as next door neighbours to the BBC at
MediaCityUK, the University of Salford wanted a standout project
that would showcase them as a leading authority in creative
technologies.
To achieve this, we took one of Salford's most famous sons,
Lowry, borrowed one of his paintings and quite literally brought it
to life.
Erecting huge canvases at the campus and in the city centre,
Lowry to Life utilised 'Kinect' motion capture technology to map
members of the public, transforming them digitally into characters
on Lowry's painting of Manchester's Piccadilly Gardens. As
participants moved, their image and actions were projected on to
the canvas in front of their very eyes - literally bringing Lowry
to Life.
The campaign resulted in masses of coverage, attracting local
and global interest on and offline. The ultimate praise came from
the Lowry Estate who noted that interest in Lowry work escalated
during the time of the campaign. For the University, it allowed
them to showcase their digital capabilities on a giant stage.
